The Timeline is a DHTML-based AJAXy widget for visualizing time-based events. It is like Google Maps for time-based information. The Key Events Timeline contains entries for events spanning the whole of world history. The Study Unit timelines contain events occurring in a fixed time period relating to a particular historical theme.
You can get to the Key Events Timeline from the Home Page or the Study Units search/browse page. Other, more specific timelines are accessible from the relevant Study Unit pages.
Once the Timeline has loaded you will be presented with time bands which you can click and drag horizontally to access the timeline events (Note: you can also use the left and right cursor keys to pan each band).
Events that have a specific start and end date, like wars, are represented by a coloured bar the length of the event time span. Events which occur on a particular date are represented by a coloured bullet. Clicking on any of the above events will display the event details in a popup layer called an event bubble. Event bubbles include links to relevant Study Units.
Note: events on the Key Events Timeline are colour coded according to theme: blue for military, red for political, and green for social.
Below the timeline there are some further navigation aids to help access the years you are looking for:
To Center timeline by year - enter the year in the box provided and click the Go button. To access B.C. you must use minus symbol before the date.
To Center timeline by decade - click on the appropriate decade link.
To Center timeline by century - click on the appropriate century link.
Note: the decade and century options only appear when they are appropriate for the period covered by a particular timeline.
You can also print the timeline as it appears on screen, view a text-only version, or get a Durable URL for the page.
